SOUTH AFRICAN stocks opened in the black today tracking positive global sentiment, particularly in Asia and the US. In opening trade, the JSE all share index had gained 0.28%, with resources up 0.16% and platinum producers collecting 0.42%, but gold miners shed 0.27%. Banks advanced 1.01%, financials rose 0.73% and industrials strengthened 0.18%.
Gold was quoted at $1,101.25 a troy ounce from $1,106.70 at the JSE's last close, and platinum was at $1,351/oz, from $1,358/oz at its previous close.
A local trader said: "A good opening is attributed to positive sentiment from around the world, particularly Asia and the US adding impetus to the local bourse. However, with Dow futures down a fraction, I wouldn't expect the market to run away today. www.directinvestment.biz -
