The attack on the Togolese soccer team in Angola is regrettable and should be condemned in the strongest terms. It is also regrettable that European journalists are now questioning the safety of the players and spectators during the 2010 soccer world Cup in South Africa.
The picture being painted is that Angola and South Africa are close neighbours in a vast continent. In fact, the only commonality between South Africa and Angola is the location of the two sovereign countries in the continent of Africa. They are separate independent states that share no common borders, language or transport routes.
In terms of a global comparison, an incident in Greenland has no effect on life in Canada. Equally, an incident in Finland is irrelevant in England and Turkish citizens do not service their cars in Spain. In the same way, the security situation in Angola has no effect on life in South Africa.
Preparations for the World cup are on track and the transport, retail, accommodation, health and security preparations will ensure a wonderful feast of soccer.
