In a surprise move, South African Airways (SAA) has ordered an additional five Airbus A320 aircraft, taking its order to 20, the French aircraft manufacturer said yesterday. The aircraft will replace its fleet of leased Boeing 737-800s.
Last year SAA announced that it had agreed to take delivery of the A320s, but would push back delivery two years to 2013, instead of next year. The postponement allowed the airline to take advantage of favourable lease rates last year on its 737-800 fleet. The original leases began expiring last year. SAA and Airbus have since been locked in discussions to thrash out the details of the agreement.
While neither side is willing to discuss the details, SAA is believed to have secured a significant discount on the aircraft.
