Foreign tourists spend 34% more, says Visa.

TOURISM spend by foreigners in South Africa A shot up 34% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same time last year, the latest data from international credit card group Visa show .

This, according to Visa, was due to the rebound in the economy and to fans planning their trips to SA for the World Cup.

The biggest spending markets in the first three months of the year were the UK, 26% up, the US, up 16%, Germany rising 27% Australia up 29,8%. There was also a strong increase in transactions from African visitors, with Malawi up 168%, Mozambique 118% , Angola 115% and Botswana rising 18%.

Visa said in its report that these numbers should continue to increase during the World Cup, citing a Grant Thornton study released earlier this year which showed visitors were expected to spend R30200 on average and stay 18,7 days in the country .
