Tens of thousands turn out to cheer on national team

TENS of thousands of South Africans danced in the streets of Johannesburg yesterday, as World Cup excitement reached fever pitch two days before kickoff.

Clad in yellow and blowing vuvuzelas, people of all ages lined the streets to see the Bafana Bafana players as they trundled through the crowds in an open-top bus.

The squad has been overwhelmed by an unexpected outpouring of national fervour after years of indifference and scepticism about SA ’s ability to host the World Cup.

Many foreigners joined the crowds yesterday. “I love the energy. It makes you want to be South African,” said Elsa Oliveira, an Angolan-American student.
