World Cup visitor tally ‘may defy caution’.

As many as 300000 visitors could have come for the World Cup in the first three weeks of the month, said Grant Thornton consulting.

This suggested that the revised prediction in April of a total of 373000 visitors could be too low.

A Department of Home Affairs report on Friday showed 744520 foreigners entered SA between June 1 and 24. Given that some of the usual regional traffic — of traders and shoppers from neighbouring countries — would have deferred their travel until after the tournament, the number of World Cup visitors could be close to 300000.

Actual figures would be known only after Statistics SA’s publication of actual traffic in September or October.
