SA is firmly cementing its role as one of the leading providers of development assistance in Africa. This forms part of SA’s foreign policy objectives to stabilise the economies of poor African countries, and to keep economic migrants from entering SA in search of opportunities.
The latest figures from the Government indicate that SA allocated R476m to development projects in selected African countries in 2009. Key focus areas are good governance, prevent conflict, human resource development, agriculture, humanitarian assistance and the socioeconomic development.
The biggest beneficiary of the fund are Zimbabwe (300m), Lesotho (R100m), the DRC (R20m) and Madagascar (R14m).
