Toyota South Africa Motors, and Arctic Trucks, the specialist Icelandic Hilux converter, have signed an agreement to dress up six South African-built Hilux pick-ups for use in the freezing Antarctic.
Four Hilux vehicles will operate as back-up vehicles in the gruelling Antarctic Ski Challenge to the South Pole, to be held at the end of the year as part of the Extreme World Races series. The fifth Hilux, will be built for the Indian National Centre of Antarctic and Ocean Research.
These vehicles are fitted with heavy-duty suspension and differential locks on both axles, a 160l fuel capacity, compressed air tank and compressor, an extra heavy-duty dual air filtration system, a 24 V generator and ground clearance of up to 480 mm.
