Strong interest as South Africa’s Transnet moves ahead with branch-line plan

Transnet has called for expressions of interest for its underutilised branch-line network and has received 115 registrations by June. The deadline for EOI submissions is October 25, 2010.

The branch lines comprise 35%, or 7 278 km, of the State-owned utility's 20 953-km rail network, with 3 928 km currently operational. The group's shareholder and board have restricted private participants to the operation and maintenance of the lines, or clusters of lines, through concession agreements. The physical infrastructure assets would be retained within Transnet, as would the branch-line staff.

Concessionaires would be entitled to operate passenger or freight services, or a combination thereof, with Transnet providing rolling stock on lease.
