SA might be a young country, but it holds its own when it comes to the vintage brands, with Nederburg wine dating back to 1810 and Mrs Ball’s Chutney to 1852. Research has shown that 124 brands were more than 70 years old, and 70 were more than 100 years old. This is an indication... of the country’s long involvement with brands and branding and organized commerce.
Some interesting examples are Henry White ’s Red Heart Rum (1877) and Singer Sewing Machines (1880). Others include Barnettes, 113 years old, the Barlows company is 106 years old, All Gold preserved foods, 101 years old, and the Ackermans retailer which is 93 years old.
Strong brands and sustained retail are a strong indicator of a country’s development.
