US ENERGY group Westinghouse will use South African pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR) technology in the conceptual design and planning of the next generation of nuclear plants in the US, the company said yesterday.
The US government earlier this month chose two teams, one led by Westinghouse and another by General Atomics, to carry out the initial work for its next-generation nuclear plant programme. The Westinghouse team includes SA’s PBMR company.
The US department of energy said the initial work on the programme would start in a month and be completed in the first quarter of next year. It would take Westinghouse at least 12 months to decide on possible further investment in the company.
