PETROLEUM Agency SA has awarded petrochemicals group Sasol , Norwegian energy company Statoil and US-based Chesapeake Energy Corporation an onshore petroleum technical co-operation permit, Sasol said yesterday.
The proposed exploration will focus on finding potentially commercial recoverable shale gas resources, according to Sasol. It said that over the past decade shale gas — clean, natural gas produced from shale — had become an important source of natural gas in the US and interest ha d spread to potential gas shales in SA, Canada and Europe.
The discovery of large deposits of gas in the Karoo Basin could alleviate SA’s power and fuels shortage. Sasol said shale gas could also help reduce SA’s greenhouse gas emissions.
